A Song for Sunday – “His Eye is on the Sparrow”

It’s Sunday and a fabulous time for a song!A Song for Sunday - "His Eye is on the Sparrow" - Melanie Redd

One of my all time favorites it “His Eye is on the Sparrow.”

From that great bastion of knowledge, Wikipedia, comes this history on the song:

His Eye Is on the Sparrow” is a Gospel hymn. Although today it is a staple of African-American worship services, the song was originally written in 1905 by two white songwriters, lyricist Civilla D. Martin and composer Charles H. Gabriel. The song is most associated with actress-singer Ethel Waters who used the title for her autobiography.

This song was featured in a movie called, “Sister Act” several years ago.

When I heard these two young women sing this particular version of the song, I fell in love with it.

Here is the scene from the movie:

And, here is the featured song performed by Lauren Hill and Tanya Blount.

Lyrics: His Eye is on the Sparrow

“His Eye Is On The Sparrow”
(feat. Tanya Blount)

[Tanya Blount:]
Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is he
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches over me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me[Lauryn Hill:]
I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrowAnd I know he watches
[Tanya:] He watches me
[Lauryn:] His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches
[Tanya:] I know he watches
[Lauryn:] I know he watches me[Lauryn & Tanya:]
I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow[Lauryn:] And I know he watches me
[Tanya:] He watches me
[L&T:] His eye is on the sparrow
[Tanya:] And I know he watches me
[Lauryn:] He watches me
[Tanya:] He watches me, I never thought…
[L&T:] He watches me
Blessings to you today,
Melanie

  1. Reminds me of my Mother, her absolute favorite song! She went home to heaven when I was only 22 years old. I miss her every day, this song always brings sweet memories of her smile and joy in the Lord!
