I am so excited to share with you a summer filled with positive, helpful movie reviews! My hope is that these will be the best family movies for your summer break.
I’m calling this series, “Amazing Summer Movies for Families to Enjoy.”
I’ve invited some of my favorite blogging friends to share movies they love with you. Each Wednesday morning, I’ll add a new review for you to enjoy.
You and your family can gain a whole slew of great movie suggestions from reading these weekly reviews. I hope these articles will lead to a fun summer of movie watching for you and your crew.
I was contacted a few months ago by Melanie Redd to be a part of her Amazing Summer Movies for Families series. I was so excited because movies are something I truly enjoy. The creative side of me appreciates all aspects that take place in telling a story via film. However, my analytical side sometimes brings out the critiquing side of me. This sometimes prevents me from enjoying the movie because I am constantly asking questions.

Last month I was so proud to celebrate my niece’s high school graduation. It was a surreal moment in time for myself. The same baby girl that I held in my arms 18 years ago was now graduating. After a cookout Saturday, the inspiring proceedings, and church on Sunday, I was invited to go see a movie with her family. They were going to see Wonder Woman, and since I am a HUGE comic book fan, I was excited to go!
When I was about 2 years old, my mother sewed for me my very own Batman costume, complete with cape and cowl. She has a picture of me preparing to jump off the couch wearing it. Since then I’ve watched the Batman TV show, the Superfriends, and Justice League cartoons. and all the different Batman movies throughout the years. (The Dark Knight trilogy is the best and my favorite of them all, but back to Wonder Woman)
Here are my thoughts on the movie itself and a few details to help you determine if you would like to check it out.
Movie title: Wonder Woman
Released June 2, 2017, in local theaters
Actors: Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman/Princess Diana) Chris Pine (Capt. Steve Trevor) Connie Nielson (Dianna’s mother) Robyn Wright, from the Princess Bride too!
Genre: Fantasy/Action Adventure/Romance
I don’t want to give anything away because there are lots of surprising and heroic plot twists in the movie. Don’t be scared off by the romance mention. This is a movie for all ages. we had kids with us from ages 11 to 21 and they all enjoyed the movie. There is a romantic scene, but only a kiss is shown and then fades to black. The scene is key to amplify what takes place towards the end, but that’s all I’ll say.
Why we ALL loved this movie:
The storytelling. Not only was the lead role portrayed by a talented actress, it was also directed by a woman. Patty Jenkins did a tremendous job of telling the origin of how the Amazon women came to be living on a beautiful secluded island. It was fascinating to see a glimpse of the Greek mythological story involving Zeus and Ares, the god of war, told.
As with any successful project, a solid foundation must be set before moving forward. I feel the director did n excellent job of setting up the story of Wonder Woman. The island scenes depicting Diana’s home of Themyscira were shot on the southern coast of Italy. I would love to vacation there someday! The crystal blue waters and the scenery were spectacular!
How many Stars? Why I give the movie 4.75 out of 5 stars!
I really want to give this movie 5 stars but remember there is the critic side I must not ignore. When Princess Diana and the Amazon women are unexpectedly invaded by the soldiers fighting in the World War, their world as they knew it was crudely interrupted. There is a battle scene that takes place on the beach, but nothing gory or unpleasant.
The athleticism and the skill in which these women battle is very impressive. The naivety that Princess Diana has in relating to a man for the first time is fascinating as well, but I did not care for the sexual innuendos as the two main characters were talking on their way to fight in the war. It is only for a few minutes but nothing overt. I guess the director is reinforcing just how little the lead character knows about anything outside of her world.
I am not going to reveal the entire movie but once the two main characters return to the battlegrounds, Princess Diana embraces her inner Wonder Woman! With a heart of compassion for those who cannot help themselves. she fights with such power and strength, and you are blown away by some of the things she can do.
This movie is the definition of a summer blockbuster. There is an interesting background story, a few tugs at the heart strings, some funny moments, surprising twists at the end, and lots of eye-opening action. The director leaves an opportunity for a follow-up movie in the future?
Me, my niece, the oldest of my sisters and their entire family absolutely enjoyed this movie! In fact, my sister was ready to go see it again days later. I had forgotten about her Wonder woman pajamas that she used to wear as a child growing up. Currently, the movie has garnered $745 million dollars worldwide, which is an amazing accomplishment.
It is the highest grossing film ever by a female director, and the highest grossing opening weekend by a female director and lead female comic movie character. So, if you are wanting to take a break and get out of the summer heat, get everyone together, grab your popcorn, and go see Wonder Woman. I highly recommend this movie. You will not be disappointed. Wonder Woman is currently showing in your neighborhood theaters.
Happy movie watching…
