Take-out Tuesdays: Cheap & Delicious at Las Delicias

About a year ago, our college-age kids introduced us to the most interesting, inexpensive and wonderful little Mexican restaurant.

It’s called, “Las Delicias.”

The college kids call it, “Las Del.”

The restaurant was started by a man named Antonio Martinez who moved to Memphis to work with the I.T. department of a large warehouse company. He was very successful in this position, but the company wanted to move him back to Mexico City. He refused to move his family back to Mexico, and the company fired him.

Antonio was already making tacos in his garage and selling them to the neighbors. He and his family decided to open a restaurant that would serve authentic Mexican food without all of the hype and the sombreros.

Las Del is a just a nice place that serves wonderful, fresh Mexican food.

We’ve personally tried two of the three Memphis locations. You can find the restaurant at:

  • 4002 Park Avenue (Near the U of M)
  • 3727 South Mendenhall (near the Mendenhall Shopping Center)
  • 5689 Quince Road (Near the Lichterman Nature Center)

Each time we go to Las Del, we enjoy hot chips and fresh salsa served in a bottomless bowl of both chips and dip.

They happily bring you more and more and more.

I think I could make an entire meal from their amazing chips and salsa. (And, I think many of the college students do)!

The guacamole is also a wonderful choice and something for which this restaurant is known.

According the their website, “Our guacamole is made fresh to order with chunks of avocado, chopped tomatoes, jalapeños, onions, cilantro and freshly squeezed lime juice. We serve it with our homemade chips made right here in Memphis in our own kitchen”  (http://www.lasdeliciasrestaurant.com).

Recently, I had the chance to try the East Memphis location with two of my sweet friends (Pam and Barbara) and one of their young daughters (Abigail). You’ll see my friends pictured below:

We started with three kinds of dip: cheese dip, salsa and guacamole. Yum!

Abigail, who is two, especially enjoyed the cheese dip and chips.

She literally took her spoon, scooped up a bunch of cheese dip and ate it without the chips.

I got a kick out of watching her eat.

For lunch, we ordered quesadillas and burritos; I had a chicken and cheese quesadilla.

One of the other girls ordered burritos. Everything was fresh and tasted good.

I took a photo of the menu, but you can’t really make out all of the choices and prices.

So, I’ve attached a link if you’d like to see a more clear image of what’s offered: http://www.lasdeliciasrestaurant.com/menu.html.

As for the prices, that may be the best part.

Everything is quite reasonable at Las Delicias. A family of four can eat for about $30 if you all drink water. And, the prices are the same at both lunch and dinner times. (Costs do not go up just because it is dinner time).

Should you want more information about Las Delicias, you can access their website by clicking this link: http://www.lasdeliciasrestaurant.com.

If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly suggest you do give it a try. But, if you go on a weekend night, get there early, because it will be crowded. Also, don’t try to go on a Sunday; the restaurant is not open on Sunday.

Here are the restaurant hours:

4002 Park Avenue

11 – 9 Monday thru Saturday  (Closed Sunday)

3727 South Mendenhall

11 – 3 Monday thru Saturday (Closed Sunday)

5689 Quince Road

11 – 9 Monday thru Saturday (Closed Sunday)

What’s really important for you to know is that: Barbara, Pam and Abigail all really like and recommend the restaurant as well.

Abigail thought it was especially enjoyable:

  1. Our family LOVES Las Delicias! My kids get the chicken soft tacos which are only $2. We love the flavor of their steak. I get the quesadilla and my hubby gets the burrito. Fantastic inexpensive food!!!

    1. Hey Brandy,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comments. Soft tacos sound good. We will have to try them!

And, it really is good food for great prices.
