What a Great Idea – Staycation Idea from Jeff and Cindy Whitney

Recently I had the chance to speak with Jeff and Cindy Whitney, long-time Memphis residents who LOVE to eat out, talk about food, read about food and try new restaurants.

In fact, the Whitneys conducted an interesting experiment in 2014. Instead of heading out to the beach, or the mountains or some exotic locale, they chose to try a “Staycation” in their own city – Memphis.

For their Staycation, they booked a room at The Peabody Hotel, a lovely refurbished hotel in the heart of the downtown area of Memphis. The hotel is a four-star hotel and one of the most popular attractions in the city. (Photos from Peabody website).

While staying at The Peabody, the Whitneys spent a great deal of their time exploring, eating and touring through the downtown and midtown areas of the city. Jeff described this entire experience as “wonderful” and something he would “highly recommend.”

During their Staycation, here are a few of the restaurants that the couple enjoyed:

DeJaVu: New Orleans Creole Soul Food and Vegetarian Restaurant is located on Main Street (51 S. Main Street). You can make online reservations on their website or at Opentable.com.

This is a New Orleans style restaurant that serves wonderful cajun, creole dishes. For a taste of the Big Easy, they offer large portions for a very fair price.

The chef /owner is Gary Williams who moved to Memphis from New Orleans after learning to cook from his momma. He has two restaurant locations: one at 936 Florida Street and the other on Main Street.

The food was “wonderful” according to the Whitneys. They highly recommend this place! To get a look at the menu, click this link: http://dejavurestaurant.org

This is definitely a place our family is going to try soon~

The Majestic Grille is located downtown on 145 South Main Street. The website describes The Majestic Grille as “dramatic dining.” You can reserve a table on their website or on opentable.com. They offer lunch, dinner and Saturday and Sunday brunches. Times include:

Monday – Thursday   11AM-10PM

Friday   11AM-11PM

Saturday Brunch   11AM-2:30PM

Saturday Dinner   4PM-11PM

Sunday Brunch    10:30AM-2:30PM

Sunday Dinner   4PM-9PM

The Majestic offers a wide variety of American cuisine items including steaks, sandwiches, salads, burgers and flatbreads. They also serve the most enjoyable little desserts.

Flight Restaurant, which is also located in the downtown area, stands at the corner of Main Street and Monroe. Flight is one of the most interesting restaurants in the area and serves wonderful food. You can make reservations on the restaurant’s website or at opentable.com.

As you prepare to order at Flight, you are invited to select a “flight” of food that you would like to eat. For example, you might select the “Salad Flight.” The server will bring you a special plate divided into three sections, each offering a different type of salad.

For the entree, you are invited to select from the following:

“The Fish Flight” (GULF GROUPER, ATLANTIC BASS, and CATCH OF THE DAY)

“The Loin Flight” (PORK TENDERLOIN, VEAL SCALLOPINI, LAMB CHOP)

“The Steak Flight” (BOURSIN STUFFED FILET, ELK CHOP, CUT OF THE DAY)

“The Feathered Flight” (CHICKEN AND WAFFLES, GRILLED PLANTATION QUAIL, DUCK BREAST)

“The Seafood Flight” (SCALLOP BENEDICT, SHRIMP AND GRITS, LOBSTER BISCUIT & GRAVY)

Flight also offers dessert flights which are amazing and have their own menu.  You can discover all of the dessert flights at this link: http://www.flightmemphis.com/menus/Dessert_Menu_4.15.14.pdf

Please note that this is a fabulous restaurant with superb service and food; however, it is not an inexpensive place to eat. You will likely spend over $125 for a party of two at dinner time, but it is well worth the price to enjoy the incredible food, romantic atmosphere and unique experience.

The Beauty Shop in located in the Cooper Young Area. The tagline for this place is, “Look Good. Eat Good.”

Open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, The Beauty Shop serves up a unique combination of entrees with dishes such as watermelon and wings. According to their website, they are “about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It scream ‘Memphis,’ yet does so with ingenuity and originality.”

Jeff and Cindy had an interesting experience at this restaurant.

The Beauty Shop was extremely crowded the night they ate there; the couple was forced to sit outside on the little porch to eat. They experienced much slower service than would have been expected at such a nice restaurant. They did not have a good experience that night.

Somehow, the owner (Karen Carrier) found out about their “unhappy” dining experience and offered them the chance to come again and eat at no cost. Their second visit to the restaurant was wonderful, and they were impressed with the kindness and courtesy shown by the owner. Jeff said that they greatly enjoyed the food as well.

Jeff and Cindy Whitney

Well, it sounds like, smells like and tastes like the Whitneys had a wonderful staycation.

Jeff says that he and Cindy could easily suggest this travel idea for others to try – to stay in, tour in, eat in and enjoy your own hometown.

*Many, many thanks to the Whitneys for sharing about their staycation experiences. We appreciate their time, ideas and fantastic restaurant suggestions!

Maybe after reading this story, others will take them up on some of their recommendations~

I know, I’m looking forward to trying out some of these places! This interview and this post have made me HUNGRY~

(By the way, if you and your family have suggestions, ideas or would like to be interviewed for a future article, please let me know. I’d love to talk with you)!
