Critics are everywhere.

And, having others criticize us is just a part of life.

Indeed, we all have to face some criticism.

However, we always get to choose our response to criticism.

If we are always defensive when criticism is leveled at us, we will miss numerous growth opportunities.

We all have things said to us and about us that are critical. This can be hard. Here are 3 excellent tips on how to better handle criticism.

3 Excellent Tips on How to Better Handle Criticism

Here are a few tips on how to use criticism to your advantage:

First, to Better Handle Criticism, Differentiate Between Constructive and Destructive Criticism

Indeed, criticism can be positive or negative.

For example, when someone is trying to help us, they may offer positive criticism. It is meant to help, not hurt.

Truly, positive criticism can help you improve your skills or address your weaknesses.

Also, positive criticism is given respectfully.

It might hurt, but it can also help us to become better people.

Negative criticism, on the other hand, is given to hurt or lower your self-esteem.

It may be a careless comment given without consideration for your feelings.

Often, destructive criticism is general and shows a high level of ignorance.

It is the kind of criticism that Theodore Roosevelt addressed in his timeless ‘Man in the Arena’ speech.

Second, to Better Handle Criticism, Watch Your Response

The good news is… we get to choose how to respond.

Indeed, you have absolute control over how you respond to your critics.

Destructive criticism can easily rile people up. This is especially true if the criticism strikes a sensitive chord.

If you feel like you might erupt or say something you will regret later, walk away and compose yourself.

Don’t let someone else’s words ruin your day!

With positive criticism, take time to reflect on what the other person said. If you find some truth in the comments, try your best to improve.

Third, to Better Handle Criticism, Take Action

Nobody likes to be criticized.

However, criticism can provide an excellent opportunity for us to grow.

If someone offers constructive criticism, take it in stride. Then, choose to incorporate changes in your life.

No one likes to be constantly criticized.

And, if someone is always critiquing you, you may need to put some distance between you and this person.

For example, you could be wearing the loveliest
women’s Valentine’s day shirts, and that person still finds something negative to say about you.

With such people, avoidance is the best tactic.

Surround yourself, instead, with people who celebrate you and want to see you grow.

You Can Apologize or Thank The Critic

When someone points out something you did wrong, rise above, and make amends.

Apologizing shows that you accept responsibility.

You are willing to own your mistakes and make corrections.

It also puts you in a better state of mind knowing that you did the right thing.

Don’t forget to thank those whose constructive criticism helps you grow.

Conclusion

Criticism can tear you down or build you. Indeed, it all depends on how you handle it.

The rule of thumb when dealing with a critic is never to lose your cool.

Where criticism is offered constructively, be sure to take it in stride. This skill will serve you well over time.
