The reason a lot of people including myself no longer attend church is that they are usually woefully out-of-date with regards to recent biblical scholarship. Modern critical academic biblical scholarship contradicts outdated conservative evangelical thinking about the biblical texts and what each author was trying to convey. These modern interpretations and ideas are taught in mainline seminaries, and there are pastors who know better and are often (in order to keep their jobs) forced to preach an outdated message to their more conservative congregations because they’re not ready to hear what really is the truth regarding modern biblical scholarship
