If you’re like everyone else on the planet, you probably spend a little bit of time every day thinking about how you could probably look a little bit better.

If you’re like me, you’ll just suck the stomach in a bit and hope that no one ever notices!

But with the new year on us, millions of people will be making resolutions. If you’re one of them (as I will be), then you’ll want to make sure that your goals don’t just last through January.

Instead,  we need goals that help us live the life of our dreams.

How to Get More Fit This Year:

Surround Yourself With The Right People

Research gives us reasons why we should hang out with people who are better than we are.

A study on obesity found that when you have an obese friend, you are 57% more likely to be obese yourself.

Indeed, the results of this study showed even deeper importance in choosing your friends: When a friend of a friend is obese, you have a 25% higher chance of being obese.

When a friend of a friend of a friend (yep, 3 levels out) is obese, you are 10% more likely to be obese. These statistics are true even if you’ve never met these friends of friends. (source).

This study shows one key fact: for better or worse, we are often very similar to our group of friends. So surround yourself with people who embody your fitness goals. This will make it much easier to get to where you want to be.

I’m certainly not saying to drop any of your friends just to get abs, but it may not be a bad idea to make some new friends, maybe at the gym or a local fitness class.

Know What You Want

Science shows us the importance of knowing exactly what we want and this makes intuitive sense: if you don’t know your fitness goals, you can never realistically expect to meet them.

Studies show that we should write down our goals and make a specific plan to achieve them. When we do this, we’re much more likely to actually do what we say we’ re going to do.

When we write down our goals, make an action plan, and tell a friend to keep us accountable, our goal achieving powers go out the roof. (source).

Once you have your goal in mind, your plan in place, and have reinforced yourself with a supportive group of friends, you’re ready. It’s time to do the most important step of all:
You’re ready to start.

Begin Fast And End Strong

Starting is the single most critical element to getting your body in shape in 2019.

The problems arise when people think that they only have to start once. That’s not true.

You’ll have to start again and again, each day.

Each time you go to the gym or start a workout, you’ll be tempted to quit. Each time you pass up a Snickers or a bite of that chocolate cake, you’ll wonder if it’s really worth it.

Every single day you’ll have to start new, pushing yourself to greater heights and greater achievement than ever before. If you take one day at a time, beginning strong every day, then after long you will notice a strange phenomenon: You are improving.

And the longer you improve, the more you push yourself, the closer you will be to achieving your goals.

It is a process, not an event, but by continually choosing to begin strong, you can reach your goals and end strong.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to get fit but aren’t looking to go to the gym, you may consider a home-based workout program. Youtube has incredible home workouts that just use body weight. If you’re wanting to up the game, even more, you should look at getting a home workout machine.

As far as home workout machines go, not many can top the rower. It works for almost every major muscle group and can give a great low-impact cardio work out.

Whatever you decide to do, if you know your goals, make a plan, surround yourself with the right people, and just do it, there’s no way you’ll fail.
