I dare you to take a day off – just for yourself!

Try Something Fun on Your Day Off

Start with a few hours on your own and do something fun that you rarely do.

Try a trip to the cinema, some Broadway tickets, or maybe even discover a local playhouse.

If you are looking for some free activities, you might browse at the local library or bookstore, or check out an art gallery.

Try Something Soothing on Your Day Off

For great relaxation on your day off, you might get an appointment at a local spa or salon.

  • Get your hair cut.

  • Try a manicure and pedicure.

  • Get a massage.

  • Try a hair blow out and style – no haircut.

To combine both good health and relaxation, try something active on your day off.

  • Rent a bike at the local park and ride.

  • Visit the zoo and get in some steps.

  • Walk around a lake and enjoy the sights and sounds.

  • Hike at a local park or reserve.

  • Try rock climbing – indoors or out.

  • Get in the water and swim.

  • Borrow or rent rollerblades or skates and get moving.

Try Something Social on Your Day Off

On your day off, why not connect with an old friend who inspires you and encourages you.

There is something sweet about spending time with people who nourish our souls.

  • Enjoy a meal together.

  • Meet for coffee and catch up.

  • Go on an adventure together – something that you wouldn’t try alone.

With a few hours to yourself, why not use the time to build up your spirit?

Quiet time is hard to come by, and your time will be well spent focused on your spiritual life.

  • Grab your journal and write like crazy!

  • Take a prayer walk or a prayer drive where you spend time talking to God.

  • Listen to inspirational music and just enjoy it.

  • Read several chapters in the Bible.

Try Some Real Rest on Your Day Off

For some of you, resting is how you need to spend your day off.

You might be amazed at how much you need the rest – emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

  • Take a long nap – under the covers.

  • Take a bubble bath.

  • Look out the window; take deep breaths and relax.

  • Sit outside and enjoy the day.

  • Put your phone away and just sit; let your mind rest.

  • Fix a cup of tea or coffee and drink it slowly.

Try Something Simple on Your Day Off

Most of us spend very little time playing and enjoying the simple things in life anymore.

On your day off, why not try some simple pleasures.

  • Work a crossword or a jigsaw puzzle.

  • Paint, color, or draw a picture.

  • Try a sewing, needlepoint, or knitting project.

  • Bake, just for the fun of it.

  • Shop with only $20 and buy something for yourself.

I love these ideas Melanie. I’ve taken a mental health day or too recently, and these will do just the job to help me feel more rested and ready to re-enter the world ?

    Yes, Brittany!
I think we all push ourselves too hard and too long.
Good for you for taking a break!

I just took a day off on Saturday. It was the first time in ages and it was wonderful! I loved being able to simply let the day flow without a list and deadlines. I agree – they are necessary for refilling us when we get depleted. Thanks, Melanie!!

Oooh, this is so tough to do, but so necessary! And better to do it when you can actually enjoy the day off, rather than when you’re too burned out to cope. Thanks for sharing my article as well!
