Can our mindset impact our weight?
If we change the way we think, can we change our weight, our health, and our lives?
Absolutely, we can!
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 23:7, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
Today, I have the privilege of introducing you to an amazing woman who completely changed her mindset, her thinking, and her life.
Her story is going to bless you!
How to lose weight by changing the way you think
Meet Janelle Keith…

Recently, I talked with Janelle, and I asked her to share some of her experiences and weight-loss secrets.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.
I live in a quiet little town near Stillwater, OK. Additionally, we are retired parents enjoying the peace and calm. We have two adult children. My daughter is married to a Captain at Frontier Airlines and lives in Orlando, Florida. Together they are raising three grandchildren.
My son is a carpenter in the making. He is building his future home and family and does home repair. We have one cat (don’t judge)! Three years ago I left my full-time position as a morning show DJ on a popular Christian Radio station and pursued my love of writing. Now have written my first book called Grace For Your Waist – Living A Lifestyle Fitted With Hope.
You’ve been on quite a journey over the past few years. Would you share your story?
I’ve overcome a lot of fears this year. In 2013, I reached my lowest point on the scale and weighed in at an unhealthy weight. I was mentally stressed, emotionally drained and completely burnt out. So I took a year to pray through a decision that was liberating.
I left my full-time job and it’s financial security to write my book about finding God’s grace in the middle of weight loss. I never thought I could maintain the weight loss nor
write a book about the process, but with focus and determination, God helped me overcome that too.
What has been the most challenging part of this adventure?
Sticking with it! Daily I rely on what I know that is good nutrition and fitness. You can overindulge in even good choices too. Losing weight is one way to live but living free of food addiction is a lifestyle that takes years to accomplish. Often we give up to early, or simply stop trying. Now exchanging my “loser” mentality to adopt a “winning”
personality for Jesus!
What are 2-3 amazing lessons you have learned along the way?
There’s so many but I would say the most impactful lessons are: 1. God’s grace is ENOUGH for your every weakness. 2. Losing weight is hard work. 3. To attain any goal you to give up something you love for something you love more. 4. Stay the course even when you want to give up. (Okay that was four!)God’s grace is ENOUGH for your every weakness. How have you stayed motivated?
One of the ways I stay motivated is I don’t give myself much variety. Mundane works for me, I had to make food less interesting. I do enjoy simple foods more now and am not overwhelmed by choices at every meal. I am able to make some automatic choices, but I’ve learned to prepare for meals that prevent binges. Some think I’m too restrictive but it’s best to stick with what I know works for me. That’s an individual process.
Who has encouraged you as you’ve gone through all of this?
My accountability partner, Tina, and my husband. My husband is my biggest fan even though he too struggles with weight being a diabetic. Tina is amazing and helps me talk things out. We pray together, attend cooking classes together and is intelligent about nutrition by diligence! She is an expert in plant-based eating and understands the
science. Her knowledge is key but she is passionate about helping in the process and practice what she preaches!
Most of all, it’s her willingness to understand all the emotional changes that present themselves. You have to have someone who holds your heart, in addition to God. He’s the best strength of course, but she is a helper of Heaven with skin on! No one should go through life with all of its hurdles alone. (And she understands my tears!)
You’ve written a new book. Tell us about it!
My book is my miracle story of my 132-pound weight loss. But it’s not a diet plan at all but the process of cleaning out my spiritual “closet”, setting my mind on God, resting my
identity in Christ, and doing the work of bettering myself by adopting God’s ways. I’ve realigned my identity in Christ and that has made a huge difference instead of labeling myself by my past failures. Additionally, I’ve learned to rely on Him to do something I felt powerless to do on my own but without weight loss pills or surgery.
I totally rely on the goodness and grace of God to help me. My food desires have turned into a hunger for the Lord. We can ask the Lord to be Lord in our lives, but there are areas where we resist his Lordship. My book Grace For Your Waist – Living A Lifestyle Fitted With Hope is my story for His glory.
Hope should always be shared and I pray that the Lord touches lives and uses the book to reintroduce Himself to those who believe they are hopeless and have given up. What’s true is that God cares about where He dwells and health is a serious matter. We must clean up our physical “houses” for Him to rule and reign in our lives. What’s true is that God cares about where He dwells and health is a serious matter. Click To Tweet
Where can we get a copy of your book?
It’s available on Amazon in softcover and Kindle versions. Also available at my website www.thejanellekeith.com. If you want to check out my website, you will see the cute v-neck shirt to match the book!
Anything else you’d like to share?
Never in my wildest dreams did I know that the Lord would use my story to make a difference in someone else. I once prayed to God to make me whole. That was after
I surrendered my will to overeat and live totally for Him. He’s made many promises that are still unfolding.
This journey has been full of adversity and pain, but such a worthy process where transformation awaits everyone. Hope doesn’t’ let the story end, and should always be shared to encourage the saints and lift up the name of Jesus. It’s all about Him and how the cross has the final word.
So because He lives, I’m empowered to live as Christ lives and replicate the nature of God’s love to everyone. And that includes loving myself too. If anyone has been changed by writing my story, it’s me, the person behind these keys.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV
