How to Memorize Scripture & Actually Remember It!

Anxious.

I was always anxious as a child.

Always.

My parents frequently remind me of the many times I called them into my room late at night, fearful of the silliest things that didn’t seem so silly when I was eight.

They would hold me, pray with me, sing over me, and remind me of Truth.

Ever since those fearful nights, I have come to realize something incredibly important.

In times of fear and anxiety, it is essential to have solid Scripture in your back pocket to calm and comfort.

When you’re angry or bitter, you need Truth to equip and challenge you. When you’re uncertain, grab hold of the Word and don’t let go.

This powerful tool doesn’t come easily. It will only come with a meaningful study of God’s Word designed to help you remember Truth.

How to Memorize Scripture & Actually Remember It!

The Bible tells us that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV)

We must be hiding the Word in our hearts.

Additionally, we must be laying hold of the powerful tool God has given us in His Word – a tool with the ability to teach, correct, train, and equip for all of God’s work.

We must be made complete by filling ourselves with the Word. Did you catch that? “…that the man of God may be complete.”

Memorizing Scripture is important.

And this is why I don’t believe there is a method that will offer “five quick steps to memorize Scripture.”

Rather, I invite you to engage with the process & choose to be diligent. Choose to devote time each day to the study and memorization of the Bible.

Devote yourself to memorizing all of the verses (including the reference) for those much-needed moments of fear, anger, bitterness, anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt.

Here is a straightforward method for how I have come to memorize Scripture:

First… Start by buying (or making) a little 3×5 notecard book.

I find these little notecard books at Target or Walmart for a few dollars. Some notebooks have different colored cards; some are plain.

Make sure to find one that can easily fit into your purse or coat pocket.

If you don’t want to buy one, keep a stack of 3×5 notecards bound by a rubber band or a large paperclip.

Second… Choose 5-10 Scripture verses that you want to memorize. I call these “fighter verses.”

Unsure what verses to choose?

Try one or more of the following.

“We demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.”

(2 Corinthians 10:5)

“…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.”

(Matthew 28:20)

“Do not fear, nor be afraid; have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? Indeed, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”

(Isaiah 44:8)

“God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should change His mind. Has He said and will He not do? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good?”

(Number 23:19)

“Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield for those who take refuge in Him.”

(Proverbs 30:5)

Third… Write your fighter verses on the notecards, starting a new card for each verse.

If you want to make your notecards pretty, consider using markers or colored pencils.

You can underline certain words of importance, draw pictures that spark your memory, or decorate your cards.

Keep in mind that I still have all of the 3×5 fighter verse notebooks I’ve ever created. (I’ve created a lot.)

It is my prayer that your cards will be well-loved and well-used, so it is worth the time to make them uniquely yours.

Fourth… Carry this notecard book with you in your purse, the car, the doctor’s office, the school pick-up line – really, anywhere you go.

As your collection grows, you could choose to keep one notebook in your car, one in your bathroom (hey, it’s a good spot!), one in your purse, etc.

Fifth… Anytime you have a few minutes (a time when you’d normally get out your phone & check Facebook), flip through your fighter verses and read them either to yourself or out loud, making sure to read the reference each time.

This doesn’t have to be difficult.

Rather, you are intentionally spending the time to hide the Word in your heart.

You are reading and praying and reciting Scripture during several moments throughout the day. It’s powerful – let me tell you.

Sixth… After you’ve memorized the first five verses in your notebook, add five more.

If you’re struggling with something specific, find some verses that relate to your situation.

You could even start a notebook for each category – one for anxiety, one for marriage, one for boldness, etc.

Finally… Repeat the process over & over & over again.

This process does take longer than 30 minutes. It will be more difficult than “read it ten times, say it ten times, write it ten times.”

This method takes time – real-time that you would normally spend scrolling through Pinterest, reading a magazine, making a grocery list, etc.

But I promise you that the truth you saturate your mind with today will impact your tomorrow.

Devote yourself to this discipline & watch as the Lord plants Truth in the crevices of your heart. Click To Tweet

This is life-changing.

This is a great post, it gives me hope that after decades I can really make improvement on memorizing scripture! I don’t do too badly on getting the gist down, but have always struggled with remember enough words to recall correctly in times of need or remembering their address. My brother has been a Christian less than a year, and when we talk he says things like ‘oh, I think you mean the verse in Galations 6″, etc. It blows my mind! Thanks for the tips

    Amen, Crista.
And, we all can make an improvement on memorizing more scripture. I know I can!
Sounds like your brother is on fire! Love hearing this!
    Appreciate your kind words today.
    Blessings,
    Melanie
