Thank you for writing this article about Joel Osteen and others like him and for being honest and open and accepting. If you speak the truth the truth will set you free and the truth is in God’s word. My husband for many years kept listening to Joel Osteen and I stopped he asked me one day ‘why do you not listen when he’s on tv ? I said honestly there’s no background history and he looked puzzled, so I said God’s word the Bible is not mentioned much to backup his messages and I need that for evidence to understand his messages. I went to Baptist Church for a long time and then went to non denominational but they always used the word of God in their messages. Just a week ago he says to me ‘Hiney I stopped listening to Joel Osteen and I said why he goes he’s a great storyteller but that’s about all he is to me now’ and inside I was like just like a man when I stopped talking or commenting that’s when he saw what I was talking about all these years. Thank you for confirming my sane belief you’re truly authentic and genuine in your honesty but you do with Gods love and grace and I appreciate it so much. May your ministry continue to be blessed and increase through the years and people like me continue to find you in the internet.

Love this. Spot on! Especially resonate with your comments on happiness – I think a lot are misinformed on that!! Seems to me the gospel often teaches the opposite – persecution and hardship as a result of obedience to God. Waiting for treasures in heaven instead!!

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I know it’s been a bit and I’m just happening upon it.

My 2 cents:
If someone is a popular preacher by worldly standards – look very closely. In the case of Rob Bell – he has directly changed the scriptures to suit what he wants Christianity to be. I tell people that it’s so important to KNOW the scriptures for YOURSELF. Plain and simple. I have only been diving into the word for myself for four years and I can’t believe what the Lord has shown me. Pastors/preaching should be like a supplement. A multi vitamin is good, but it’s not a substitute for a healthy diet of fruits vegetables. Same with preaching. It should supplement what you’re already learning on your own. A little boost.

What he DOES say, is that when they're NOT, when things are going wrong, dont get all depressed. Take heart and remember that God has promised to WORK ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR GOOD. ALL things. Not just the nice things but in EVERYTHING He is moving and working and turning things for ULTIMATE GOOD. What I get from Joel is encouragement to keep trusting. To know to God has our Best in mind. His purposes are GOOD. Hes our Daddy and He wants the very best for us. Sometimes that's at the top of a mountain with a steep climb, sometimes it'll go smoothly and fall into place. We are told in the Bible 365 times to FEAR NOT. But we're good at getting fearful when things go wrong.
