Top Tips For Helping An Elderly Loved One.

While you may be willing to go above and beyond when caring for an elderly loved one, it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin.

After all, they may have complex health needs that must be addressed. Or you may find it hard to balance caring duties alongside the rest of your responsibilities.

With that in mind, here are three ways to help your loved one as they enter their golden years.

First, Find a Place for Them to Live

Find a place for them to live. There are many benefits associated with moving into an Independent Living facility.

For example, would it allow your loved one to gain access to more immediate healthcare support? But they’ll also become part of a larger community, which can help to prevent social isolation.

However, moving from their home to a new space can feel daunting, which is why you should help them throughout every step of the process.

For example, you should make sure that you discuss their options with them in great detail before accompanying them whenever they’d like to tour a facility. This makes it much easier (and less overwhelming) for them to find a space that they can call home.

Second, Show Up for Them

Show up for them. Sometimes, the only thing you need to do to help an elderly loved one is to show up for them.

For example, you should make sure that you speak to them every day. Do this even if that is through a text message or phone call. It only takes a few seconds to reach out, but the difference this can have on their day cannot be put into words.

You should also make sure that you stop by in person as much as you possibly can. This can help prevent social isolation and loneliness, a problem that 34% of seniors admit to experiencing.

Third, Encourage Them to Follow a Healthy Lifestyle

Encourage them to follow a healthy lifestyle. Many seniors feel as though there is no point in following a healthy lifestyle. However, this is simply not the case. For example, following a healthy lifestyle can help them to remain mobile and agile, which can prevent the onset of a range of health conditions.

If they’re finding it harder to stay on top of their health as they age, find ways in which you can help. For example, when preparing your meals each day, you could set aside (and freeze) an extra portion before dropping it off on the weekend.

Also, this means that they then have a week’s worth of healthy, balanced meals to enjoy, without having to spend hours in the kitchen. You should also encourage them to join group activities targeted directly toward seniors, as this gives them the chance to get out of the house and socialize

Closing Thoughts – Top Tips For Helping An Elderly Loved One

Final thoughts. Seeing those we love get older can be hard, especially when it means that the role of caregiver reverses (parent to child, for example). However, there are plenty of ways in which you can help your loved one make the most of this time in their lives!
