Ways The Wider Family Can Support Its Older Members.

When a beloved family member gets older, it can be challenging for the whole family.

Yet, there is so much support and love we can offer them, including the suggestions below.

Provide plenty of company

The first thing that the wider family can do to support aging family members is to ensure they have plenty of company. This is incredibly important because, as our loved ones age, they can find themselves going out and about much less.  This can be due to issues with mobility,  health,  and energy. It can even be due to the loss of friends due to them moving away or going into nursing homes.

Indeed, socialising is crucial for older people because it helps boost their mood, makes them feel connected,  and even contributes to a Greater sense of independence and autonomy in their lives.

The good news is there’s plenty you can do to help older members of your family with this issue. One of the simplest options is to set a regular time once or twice a week where you pop in to see them and catch up.  Another is to offer them transport to their friends’ homes or the community centre, where they can spend more time socializing.

Make the family home hearing aid-friendly

Hearing loss is a relatively common occurrence as people age. This means it’s quite likely that an order family member may experience some level of hearing loss at some stage.

To help them better cope with their hearing loss, the wider family can do several things. The first is to make sure they can get to and from they’re hearing appointments easily,  as well as supporting them in the appointment themselves if they request it. The next step is encouraging them to wear their hearing aid.

Also, when managing hearing loss as a family, you can create an environment that will ensure your older family members’ hearing aids will work effectively. This can include using noise insulation to reduce background noise, as well as installing plenty of light to help with reading and lip reading.

Help with cooking

Sometimes, as people get older, they can struggle to cook healthy and nutritious meals for themselves. This can be because of physical issues,  and sometimes it’s even because they lack motivation for cooking with just one person.

The wider family can help with these kinds of issues in many ways.  The first tactic here would be to include the older person in your household’s batch cooking. In this way, you can provide them with a full week’s amount of healthy meals, which can be easily stored in their freezer.

Another option would be to invite them over for their meals, something that can also help them get plenty of company.

Lastly, if these solutions don’t work for your particular situation, then how about organizing meal deliveries for the older family member?  The benefits of these include a wide choice of high-quality food that is pre-prepared and only requires heating up in the microwave.
