So the time has come to renovate your home, move house, or move to another country.

Or maybe other actions are taking place that may upend your life, but hopefully for positive reasons.

Whatever your reason may be, there is always the thought of what to do with your belongings. This tends to linger in the back of one’s head throughout the process. This is usually a case of packing up as much as possible and shipping it off to some random self-storage unit until the day comes that you need to get it all back out again.

But what if your belongings include items that hold significant value either financially, sentimentally, or both?

Well, this is where life can become a tad trickier if you want to withdraw these belongings in the same condition as you stored them. Luckily for you, we are here to provide you with a few tips and tricks that should help reduce the headache that comes with figuring out what to do with such things.

Select A Self-Storage Facility That Works For You

If you are going down the route of storing your precious things outside of your home, there are some things you might want to consider. The good news is that you have plenty of options at your disposal. Each option will have pros and cons that you will need to contend with.

According to the storage provider sparefoot, not all units are created equally. You’ll have to factor in the type of valuable you plan on storing, the length of time, and how secure you need it to be before coming to any conclusion. Regarding options for valuables in particular, this table gives you an idea of what to expect.

Facility type Best for Key benefits
Standard unit Furniture and any non-sensitive items you need to keep safe. Perhaps the most affordable and easiest to gain access to.
Climate-controlled unit Electronics, artwork, documents, etc. These units are designed to protect items from humidity and other environmental variables that could damage delicate items.
Vault-style storage Jewelry and precious metals. Often, maximum security makes them ideal for valuables that you really need to keep safe.
Private locker Smaller high-value items. These can be very discreet and very secure, think bank safety deposit box.

Know Your Valuables: Different Items, Different Rules

Sotring anything requires a bit of forethought on your behalf because not all things require different rules to keep them safe.

As you saw in the previous table, items like artwork, classic vehicles, and documents will need to be kept in secure enclosures that can keep the outside world from seeping in. This ensures longevity for belongings that are highly sensitive to environmental factors.

For instance, you might believe it is safe to store your great-grandmother’s silver cutlery set in a standard unit, only to find that it has severely tarnished over time.

Moreover, if you have anything like artwork or valuable comic books, etc, you will really need to find a place that:

  1. Allows you to store such things with them
  2. Can cater to specialist storage

Assess The Type And Sensitivity Of Each Valuable

Even once you have found a facility suitable for keeping your most valued objects safe and secure, you will still need to begin a process of categorization and inventorying. This will help with both ensuring you remember what you are storing, its value for insurance purposes, and how they need to be stored.

Categorize Your Items

The best way to approach this task is to spend some time categorizing your items based on various factors:

  • Sentimentality: This is slightly tricky to gauge what value you want to attach to it, but in most cases, there will be no monetary figure, and you want to keep it safe at all costs.
  • High-value: This really encompasses almost anything that has an intrinsically high value. You will need to appraise the items also to get the correct insurance coverage.
  • Fragility: If anything is delicate or fragile, you will need to take additional care in how you pack and store it.
  • Important documents: For most, a safe deposit box in a bank will probably be your best bet for documents.

Use Proper Materials

This section will heavily depend on the type of items you plan on storing. Since smaller things like jewelry will obviously require a different way of packing than expensive artwork, for instance. Nonetheless, for folks, the bare minimum will include:

  • Acid-free boxes (these are best as they ensure that whatever you place inside them can be stored for a long time).
  • Bubble wrap
  • Silica gel packs (to keep moisture out)
  • Plastic bins (to keep everything contained securely)

It also makes sense to prep things while you’re performing your inventory, which can involve cleaning them up and creating a photographic record of current conditions. The former is essential to make sure that any dirt and grime don’t overaccumulate, causing damage when stored long-term. The latter is vital so that you can prove if any damage has occurred while under the stewardship of the storage facility you have selected.

Insurance & Legal Considerations

If you are planning on stashing away very high-value items, it’s prudent to consider taking out insurance and any legal obligations that might exist between you and those storing your belongings. If you are dealing with lower-value things, you can probably take out a policy by yourself.

But for anything of extremely high worth, it might be a good idea to consult a lawyer and try to find insurers that specialize in covering these sorts of things. You will also have to liaise with the storage center to ensure that their facilities meet both your personal requirements and those of your insurance provider. Once you have everything agreed, you can create a contract that covers you if anything happens to your stuff, including theft, loss, or damage.

Closing Thoughts – What to Consider Before Storing Valuables for Extended Periods

Preparing to store your valuables for any length of time can be a pretty confusing task, especially if you have never done anything like this before.

But with a bit of forethought and planning, you should find a facility that takes good care of them and returns them in the same condition as you left them.
