8 Fabulous Ways to Pray for God’s Guidance (& Direction)
Often, people will reach out to our ministry and ask us to pray for them.
When we ask, how can we pray, they often respond with,
“Would you pray for me to know what God wants for my life?”
Or they will ask us to pray for God to give them guidance, wisdom, or discernment.
Most of us regularly seek the Lord for wisdom and guidance. We want to know what God wants for our lives.
To assist us in praying in this way, I have found several scriptures in the Bible that address the topic of praying for God’s guidance.
Why not choose one of these verses (or all) and begin praying Scripture and asking God to lead you wisely forward?
Here are 8 fabulous ways to pray for God’s guidance (& direction.)
First, We Can Pray Psalm 23:3 for God’s Guidance (& Direction)
“He renews my strength. He leads me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” (Psalm 23:3)
In this prayer, we can ask God to lead us around along the right paths and to keep us off the wrong paths. In doing this, we can bring great honor to His name.
Pray with me – “Lord, I ask You today to renew my strength. Would You lead me along the right path for my life? And would You keep me off the wrong paths? Would You allow me to bring great glory and honor to Your name? You are so worthy!”
Second, We Can Pray Psalm 25:4-5.
“Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.” (Psalm 25:4-5)
In praying these verses, we are both affirming our hope in the Lord and asking Him to lead us.
Pray with me – “Father, I invite You to show me the right path. Point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by Your truth and teach me. You are the God who saves me, and I will put my hope in You. God, I trust you!”
Third, We Can Pray Psalm 27:11 for God’s Guidance (& Direction.)
“Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me.” (Psalm 27:11)
In this verse, we’re asking God to help us to know how to live. Again, we’re praying that He’ll show us the right path. Even more, we all face enemies, both real and imagined. We need wisdom as those enemies are waiting for us along the path.
Pray with me – “Lord, teach me how to live. Lead me along the right path. My enemies are waiting for me, and I need to know the right way to go. Would You make things so clear that I will not miss them? Thank You for Your direction.”
Fourth, We Can Pray Psalm 143:10 for God’s Guidance (& Direction)
“Teach me to do Your will, for you are my God. May Your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.” (Psalm 143:10)
In this Psalm, we can ask God to teach us to do His will. In His graciousness, we can ask Him to lead us forward on a firm footing.
Pray with me – “Father, teach me to do Your will. You are my God. May Your gracious Spirit lead me forward. And would You lead me on firm and solid footing? I want to walk courageously and confidently.”
Fifth, We Can Pray Proverbs 3:6.
“Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:6)
In this familiar verse, we’re reminded to seek Him in all things. As we seek Him, He will show us which path to take.
Pray with me – “Father, I want to seek Your will in everything that I do. I want to bring everything to You and acknowledge You in all my ways. As I do this, will You show me which path to take? As I come to every fork in the road, will You make the best turns so clear?”
Sixth, We Can Pray Isaiah 30:21.
“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you, a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21)
As we wait on the Lord, and look to the Lord, He will lead us clearly in the direction we should go. He will bless us with direction as we seek Him.
Pray with me – “Father, would You let me hear You? Would You clearly show me whether to go to the right or to the left? I will walk with You, listen to You, and seek You. I ask that You make Your will especially obvious to me.”
Seventh, We Can Pray Isaiah 48:17.
“This is what the Lord says–your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.’”
In this verse, our God is clearly promising to teach us what is good for us and show us which path to follow. What a sweet promise!
Pray with me – “Lord, thank You for being my Redeemer. Thank You for being my Lord. Would You teach me what is good for me? Would You lead me along the perfect path I should follow?”
Finally, We Can Pray Hosea 14:9 for God’s Guidance (& Direction.)
“Let those who are wise understand these things. Let those with discernment listen carefully. The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths, sinners stumble and fall.” (Hosea 14:9)
In this verse, we are reminded to be wise and discerning. The words of Hosea remind us to pray that God will help us to walk wisely and righteously. We can also pray to stay away from sin that will cause us to stumble and fall.
Pray with me – “Lord, would You enable me to understand and to listen carefully? Lead me on the paths that are true and right and righteous. Protect me from the paths of sin and falling and misery. I want to walk in wisdom.”
Closing Thoughts – 8 Fabulous Ways to Pray for God’s Guidance (& Direction)
Of course, there is no “magic” in praying Bible verses.
However, there is great wisdom and power in using verses as a regular part of our prayer life.
As we pray scripture, we are actually praying God’s words back to Him.
Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated.
Prayer doesn’t have to be awkward and uncomfortable.
And prayer doesn’t have to be scary.
In truth, prayer can be as simple as taking a verse and turning it into your personal plea.
Let’s try that today!
