How to Have Hope in God While You Wait

Almost twenty years ago, I had the privilege of catering the rehearsal dinner for my baby sister. It was a glorious event and time in my life! Nothing screams hope like the wedding of two people who love Jesus!

She is the youngest of my four siblings, but our bond is special. Despite the thirteen-year difference in our ages, we talk the most. I never realized until she mentioned at one of my birthday parties how little she knew about me.

Since then, we have talked on the phone quite often. My sister proofreads my books. She remembers how I used to care for her as a baby. I even changed her diapers frequently. I remember the first time she called me on a specific holiday; I almost cried. She had no reason to call me that day. She just wanted me to know she remembered my caring for her. It wasn’t my birthday or any holiday that applied to me; she just called.

She makes a point of bringing her children to my home on my birthday to hang out for several hours. Last year, I got to try out my chicken crust pizza on them. They loved it! The only year we missed was the pandemic year of 2020, when everyone was required to “shelter in place.”

Hope Deferred – How to Have Hope in God While You Wait

There is one thing that Carrie and I have been praying for at least the past ten years. A new home for their family remains on our prayer list. She and my brother-in-law now have five children between the ages of three and seventeen. She has home-schooled them all and continues to do so.

I remember the disappointment in her voice when a potential move to the East Coast was upended due to a change in a work opportunity for her husband. She was ready to remove much of their accumulated “stuff” and start fresh. (I never told her I was quietly thankful because I am not a fan of the city and wasn’t sure it would have been good for them.)

So, we continue to pray for a new home for them. They have been living in the same house for 19 years and counting, with now seven people and three bedrooms!

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12.

Even though they’ve been close several times, they have not yet been blessed with their next house. I continue to pray that God will find the perfect home for them.

Hope Detoured – How to Have Hope in God While You Wait

Deep down in my heart, I believe God will bless my sister and her family with the home He intends.

But let me ask you this. Have you ever had your hope thrown entirely off the tracks?! I mean, out of nowhere, wham! And another, then another, bam! You wonder, “What in the world is going on?” Am I being attacked by Satan, or maybe disciplined by God, or could it be both? You’re almost to the point of overwhelm! Your anxiety is off the charts, and you are unsure about everything.

Listen, friend. I’ve been there, especially for the past few weeks. Last week, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time, if ever! I was in a very dark place; The painful circumstances seemed to happen all at once. There was no desire in my mind to harm myself. I just needed the pain to stop!

I figured everyone I thought of calling was at the weeknight church. So, I cried. I called out to God, asking for His help and wisdom. I needed His strength because I felt helpless. No easy answers or solutions came to mind.
