How to Make Ephesians 3:16-21 Your Personal Prayer
Recently, I’ve been looking at some of the prayers in the Bible.
I found so many prayers that people prayed themselves. Then, some prayers were prayed for a whole group of people publicly.
Also, I found many prayers written in letters for a group of people by someone (like the Apostle Paul.)
Truly, prayer soaks the pages of the Bible.
And prayer should soak our lives!
So let’s take a few minutes today and look at the prayer of Paul for the church at Ephesus. This particular prayer is found in Ephesians chapter 3:16-21.
Although Paul prayed this prayer for a group of people in the church, we are going to take this prayer and make it personal for our own lives.
Here’s the Prayer by Paul:
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.”
For our purposes, let’s break this prayer into smaller chunks and pray it ourselves.
First, Let’s Pray for Power in Our Lives – How to Make Ephesians 3:16-21 Your Personal Prayer.
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.” (verse 16)
“Father, I pray that from Your glorious, unlimited resources, You will empower me with inner strength through Your Spirit.
Thank You, Lord, that You multiplied the loaves and fishes in Mark 6:39-42 and fed thousands of people. Today, You can still do amazing miracles of multiplication in my life from Your unlimited resources and power.
Also, I ask You to provide power for my family and me—giving us inner strength through Your Spirit. I ask that You give us all that we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).”
Second, Let’s Pray for Christ to Feel Right at Home in Our Hearts.
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him.” (verse 17)
“Lord, I ask You to make Yourself right at home, in my heart and my life. I want to trust You like I’ve never trusted You before—with everything and everyone.
Show me what needs to change, be added, be removed, and be edited in my life. Because I want to honor You, I want to make my heart a place where You will want to hang out and make Yourself at home.”
Third, Let’s Pray that Our Roots Will Go Deep.
“Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” (verse 17)
“Father, I ask You to help my roots to go down deep into the depths of Your love. I pray that You will make me strong, confident, and courageous.
As in Colossians 2:7, I ask that You take my roots down deep in Christ. Grow me in my faith. Enable me to daily build my life on You, around You, and in You completely.”
Fourth, Let’s Ask God to Help Us Understand Just How Much He Loves Us.
“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” (verse 18)
“Lord God, would You give me the power to understand Your love, as all believers should? Teach me how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is for me.
Truly, I ask that you show me just how much You adore me. Allow me to comprehend the truth that nothing, nothing, nothing can separate me from Your love (Romans 8:31-39).”
Fifth, Let’s Ask God to Allow Us to Experience His Love.
“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.” (verse 19)
“Father, would you allow me to fully experience the love of Christ? Even though it is hard to comprehend, would you help me to begin to grasp it?
Open my heart and my mind and my emotions and my life to understand and experience Your amazing love. I want to enjoy Your love this year more than I ever have before. Truly, I want to fall in love with You and savor our relationship at a whole new level.”
Sixth, Let’s Ask God to Make Us Complete – How to Make Ephesians 3:16-21 Your Personal Prayer.
“Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (verse 19)
“Father, I asked that You make me complete. Fill me up with all the fullness of life and power that comes only from You. I want it all!
As in Colossians 2:10, I want to be made complete in Christ. Allow my entire self to be filled with the satisfaction and joy that You alone can give.
Even more, bless me with every spiritual blessing that You have for me. As Ephesians 1:3 mentions, would You pour out those blessings all over my life?”
Seventh, Let’s Praise God as We Close Our Prayer Time.
“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.” (verses 20-21)
“Lord, we give You all the glory. You’re able in your mighty power to work within us. Thank You that You work in our lives and are always working in our lives.
Father, I know that You’re able to accomplish infinitely more than I could ever ask or think. Beyond our wildest dreams and greatest imaginations, You are at work!
Glory to God in the church and in Jesus Christ throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.”
Ephesians 3:18-19, MSG
“And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love.
Reach out and experience the breadth!
Test its length!
Plumb the depths!
Rise to the heights!
Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.”
J. I. Packer
“To know God’s love is indeed heaven on earth.”
Corrie ten Boom
“There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.”
