Starting a Small Business?

Starting up a business is great fun but brings plenty of stress alongside it.

To reduce the pressures on you, try to be as organized as possible. Speak to people who run businesses for advice, lean on your friends and family members for support, and don’t forget it’s ok to make mistakes – every business owner does.

You will have plenty of learning curves along the way. You’ll need to pay your credit card bills, hire staff members, make sure you are compliant with regulations, and have the correct equipment for you and your team to succeed.

Below we look at four different pieces of equipment that you may require as a small business.

First, when starting a small business you will likely need a laptop.

You can ask your staff members to use their laptops, however, it is best practice to supply them yourselves.

When staff uses their own, you can come up with problems like why my Mac keeps shutting down or the software you are trying to use isn’t working correctly on my laptop.

When choosing laptops, make sure you do your research first. Laptops vary in price, starting from hundreds to thousands. You may not need the top-spec laptops as your business doesn’t require them. If you are buying a couple at the same time, see if you can get a bulk discount.

Also, make sure the laptops can run the software you will be using. Standard software like the Microsoft Suite should work but if you have any custom software, be sure that it’s compatible and that the machine is powerful enough to run it.

Second, when starting a small business you will likely need a telephone system.

Probably one of the most important pieces of equipment a small business will need is a telephone system – after all, how will you communicate with your customers if not?

Depending on the type of business you are going to run, you could opt for a mobile phone or you may need a dedicated system installed.

Make sure you research to ensure you are getting the telephone system that is right for you.

Third, when starting a small business you will likely need computer software.

“If your small business needs branding, consider using free tools like Adobe Express. For example, if you need a logo you can create one using their free Font Logo Maker.”

We touched on it above, do you require any custom software for your laptops?

Or is there software already out there that you can use?

As you can imagine, the more customized your software requirements are, the more you are going to need to pay.

Chances are, there is already the correct software out there that you can use, you just need to do some research beforehand to find it.

Finally, when starting a small business you will likely need some office furniture.

Whether you are office-based or opening a shop, you will need to buy furniture. Furniture can add up and get expensive very quickly. For this reason, we would advise making a spreadsheet to estimate the costs.

See if any friends are getting rid of pieces of furniture that you can use and don’t be afraid to go second-hand. Remember you will need to have your branding and logo added to things at the same time.
