The Hope of Praying for Your Adult Children

If you don’t pray for your adult child, who will?

One morning, as I sat with God, the Holy Spirit whispered these words to my heart. The weight of the truth gripped me. Who was praying for my children? Maybe their spouses, friends, or small group members. My husband and their grandmother prayed.

But what about my grown children who weren’t walking with God? Who’s praying for them?

If I’m among the few interceding for my children, how does that change my approach to prayer?

Could prayer be my first response instead of my last resort? What if I talked to God about their lives rather than offering formal prayers? And what if I surrendered control and exchanged worry for confidence in God? What if prayer were the antidote to my distress?

As Moms: The Hope of Praying for Your Adult Children

As a mom, lifting our children before God is a privilege. We’re not trying to change them—only God can do that. But through prayer, we partner with Him in His purposes for their lives.

Once our children reach adulthood, we often want to fix things for them. Yet Stormie Omartian, in The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children, reminds us, “We can’t ‘fix’ or ‘change’ our adult children. Only God can make changes that last. Our job is to release them into God’s hands and pray for His will in their lives.”

Let’s get practical. Here are five powerful ways to pray for your adult kids:

1. “God, help my child know You more.”

Everything good begins with knowing God intimately.

Our children may know about God but not truly know Him. That’s why we pray they grasp His character and ways—not as religious duty, but as a life-giving relationship.

“My soul, wait quietly for God alone, for my expectation is from Him” – Psalm 62:5

2. “God, guide my child each day.”

God longs to lead our children. He’s deeply invested in every detail of their lives and will direct them toward His good plan—if they surrender to Him.

Praying for their willingness to follow God’s direction sets them on the path to an abundant life.

“I am God, your God, who teaches you how to live right and well. I will show you what to do, where to go. – Isaiah 48:17

3. “God, give my child the capacity to endure hardship with grace.”

Our children will face stress, loss, and heartache—it’s part of life.

But we serve a compassionate God who strengthens and equips them to handle difficulties with grace and reliance on Him.

“Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:3

4. “God, give my child healthy relationships.”

Who our children surround themselves with matters. We long for them to have godly friendships and, if it’s His will, a loving spouse. Asking God to bring the right people into their lives is a gift to them—and to us.

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9

5. “God, help my child find fulfilling work.”

Your child’s identity doesn’t come from what they do, but it doesn’t hurt if your child finds contentment in his work. It’s beneficial when your child understands how God has wired them and pursues work in his area of strength and expertise.

Ask the Lord to infuse your child with wisdom and the internal strength to pursue their passions. Ask God to fill them with the ability to endure, persevere, and grow in the workplace.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”-Colossians 3:23

Final Thoughts – The Hope of Praying for Your Adult Children

Mom, don’t underestimate the power of your prayers.

God hears, He moves, and He is always working in your child’s life.

Keep praying—you are making a difference.
